Family Meal Ideas For a Strict Budget
When you are on a strict budget, every time you see a price tag on
something, you have a panic attack. You try your best to save on
everything you could. But what about the essential stuff like food?
This is a basic necessity and just cutting out some expensive stuff off
your grocery list simply won't do the task. You could be missing out
some really nutritious food item. Here are a few ways to help you out.
The first and foremost thing to do when you are on a strict budget is to
avoid eating out and take outs often. Look for restaurant coupons on
your local newspaper and use it if you want to have a break from home
food. A lot of restaurants and eat out joints offer a complimentary
meal if you buy one. Use it and make sure it is healthy.
Make a list of what you really want for a week's meal. Always stick to your
list. Try hard to avoid buying anything that isn't on your list.
Visit two or more grocery stores and compare prices. Do make sure the quality
of the product is also good. By comparing the prices you could switch
to the shop which offers products for a lesser price.
Make use of the coupons and deals that you collected from the newspaper and
flyers. You could get a good deal out of this. Look for sale on food
materials. Buy them only if you need them. If you are buy something
that is on sale it means you are saving. If you are planning to survive
with items only on sale then you are just being stingy.
Not all deals and items on sale offer a low price. Always try to know the
normal price of an item and then compare it with the same on sale. This
way you will save a lot of money. Check for the weekly ads and if you
find an item for a very good deal try and buy more of it. This way you
won't have to pay a full price for the same product later.
Save your coupons and the best way to redeem them is to couple it with a
sale. That way you don't have to pay more for other brands too.
Do not buy sodas or other carbonated drinks. These are expensive and do
not have any nutrition value. They do not do anything good to your body
other than loading up unwanted calories.
If time permits and if you have enough space, jump into gardening. Plant
your favorite veggies and greens. This will not only boost up your
enthusiasm but also helps you save money since you can get some of
those nice fresh vegetables from your garden. And hey, it is 100%
natural, and chemical free!
Go grocery shopping when the store is not busy. This way you will have
enough time to think and if you have second thoughts about buying
something at the checkout counter, you can decide peacefully without
having to worry about the person waiting behind you.
Teach your kids the value of money and ask them to look for coupons and other
sale ads for you. Plan a menu with them and ask them to tag along when
going to a grocery store. It takes some dedication and effort to plan
for a healthy meal when money is tight. But once you get used to it,
you will become an expert and plan for other ways to save money. At the
end of the month you will feel happy that you saved a lot of hard

Meal Planning And Dinner Ideas For Busy Moms
Meal planning helps in organizing your thoughts and resources to come up
with culinary delights that showcase your productivity. It plays a
vital part in balancing meals nutritionally, taste-wise and
cost-effectively within the time available for preparation by keeping
the dietary requirements of the family in mind.
Have a plan
A meal plan helps in making you and your family feel more organized. It
saves money, time, energy and reduces impulsive buying. It creates a
variety in the menu and gets your family members to enjoy a meal
better. Meal planning is a family activity that involves suggestions
and feedback from family members to improve efficiency. Once you get
the hang of it, it is bound to become second nature.
Having dinner with your family is the recipe to stay connected. The last meal
of the day is the time when family members get together to interact,
discuss the day's proceedings and spend quality time with each other.
It is important to make the best use of this time with your family.
Cooking for dinner can become more of a chore and less of a joy when you are a
busy mom. After an exhausting work routine that leaves you battling
against the clock, the very thought of having to slave away at the
stove for dinner is more than overwhelming. Here are some shortcuts and
dinner ideas for busy moms.
Keeping your work schedule in mind, draft a menu plan for the week to come.
Scan the pantry, freezer and fridge to find out what is available. Plan
your trips to the supermarket and be a smart shopper. Stock on fresh
fruits, veggies, healthy munchies, yogurt, milk and other essentials.
Keep it simple
Limiting the ingredients that go into a recipe reduces the time taken to prepare
it. Moreover, meals with simple subtle flavors are more likely to be
preferred than those with a dozen of exotic ingredients.
Master the basics, experiment with variations
Use some basic recipes and vary a few ingredients to come up with totally
new and exciting creations.
Go with the traditional quickies
There are some recipes sure to lend a helping hand when time is scarce.
Omelets, wraps, salads and soups are all great for quick dinners.
Cook once and eat twice
Double the quantity when you cook. One portion can be kept in a sealed
container and stored in the freezer for later use. Precooked food will
come in handy on days when you don't have time for an elaborate dinner.
Utilize the weekends
Make the most of the time available on weekends to do what you won't be able
to do during the week. Chop, sauté, clean, grind, powder,
dice, mix, bake and do any other preparation you can, to take the pain
out of cooking on week days.
Make a dinner out of leftovers
When you find food from previous meals getting piled up in containers in the
fridge, it is time to make magic out of leftovers. Create something
appealing with the variety available. Mix and match the food to come up
with interesting combinations.
Everyone loves a surprise
On a day when you get home early and if you have the time and energy, try
cooking something new. Bringing in a surprise recipe is sure to spice
up your dinner and delight your family members.
Flexibility is the key
Keep your dinner menus easy to prepare, quick and flexible. It is that time
of the day when you don't have the strength to put up with complaints
and tantrums. Schedule the family's favorites for dinner so that
everyone is content.
So all you busy mommies out there, now that you've learnt the nuances of
dinner making, wave your magic wand and behold..... Dinner is ready in

Fresh Seafood Combo Meals are A Unique Dinner Idea
When you don't live right on the coast, it
can be difficult to find good fresh seafood. Most of what you'll find
at your local grocery store is frozen and over priced, and what they
have that's 'fresh' is old and so expensive, you couldn't buy it
anyway. Do you with that you were able to make a fresh cod fillet, or
fry up some delicious fresh bay scallops, but feel like you're never
going to find them? Well think again. Looking online for a fresh
seafood combo meal will help you to find just what you're looking for,
at a great low price.
For someone who loves seafood, trying a new kind is always a treat. It's
great to be able to experience and new flavor and texture from the
ocean for the first time. If you order a seafood combo meal online,
you'll be able to try up to five different types of fish, all without
breaking the bank. This is a great way to impress your family and
friends with your seafood cooking skill, and with the extravagance of
trying many different types of fish. And because it's fresh, you know

Chef Alex Baxevanis has told all about
Mediterranean cuisine. His family is deeply rooted in the region and
knows all about it. From the snow-capped peaks of Italy to the azure
waters and the broiling deserts, the cuisine of the Mediterranean is
diverse and delicious.
What is Mediterranean Cuisine?
It's easy to get confused about the cuisine because so many countries make
up the region. The ingredients include a lot of preserved foods such as
olives, sundried tomatoes, pickled lemons and anchovies. Because of
this, Mediterranean cooks don't need to add salt to their dishes; it
comes from the base ingredients. An anchovy in a soup will add little
seafood flavor, but it will also add a salty depth you can't create any
By definition, cuisine is all the ingredients, recipes and equipment found
in a specific kitchen. So, Mediterranean cuisine is all the
ingredients, recipes and equipment found in the kitchens around the
Mediterranean. The Mediterranean, or Med, is approximately 970,000
square miles and has an average depth of about 5,000 feet.
The name Mediterranean is derived from Latin and means "inland or middle of
the Earth," referencing its landlocked nature. The only seaward exit is
the Strait of Gibraltar, a mere 14 miles wide. Visitors to the Straits
can see clear from Morocco to Italy on a clear day (while enjoying a
nice tagine or bowl of cous cous). There are a dozen and more countries
around the Med. Starting on the Iberian Peninsula going clockwise,
there is: Spain, France, Italy, Armenia, Greece, Turkey, Cypress,
Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia and
Morocco, not including several other smaller and island nations.
Naturally, through history, the peoples of all these regions took to the sea and
traded with each other. This created a diverse and cosmopolitan
cuisine, highlighted by popular regional dishes.
Chef Alex told me once, "The food of the Mediterranean is like no other, it
has been perfected through centuries of eating." He's right of course.
Many ingredients you find are preserved or packaged and their
production is rooted in 5 millennia of human history. Sardines are a
staple of kitchens along the northern shore of the Med. These fish,
actually much larger than what you see in the can, are salted and
allowed to completely dry out. Their natural oil is what keeps them
moist. The drying process causes them to shrink into what you find in
cans at the store.
Another of the famous preserved ingredients is olives. Associated with Greece,
olives are actually found throughout the region. There are several
species of olive trees that make good fruits. Olives are cured in
several ways. Brined olives are packed in a salty mixture of grape must
(pulpy un-fermented wine), spices and oil. Dried olives are salted,
seasoned and allowed to cure. Both are delicious.
The most famous preserved food of the Med is wine! According to Chef Alex,
no Mediterranean meal is complete without "the vino." People in the
region have been making wine longer than recorded history. Once the
means to keep water clean for drinking, wine is now a worldwide

Whole Fish with Garlic Butter on the Barbecue Grill
While perusing my cookbooks I found a great
recipe for your(and my) barbecue grill. You will do this with the
indirect cooking method on medium heat. I have an article on indirect
barbecue method but basically you cook over a drip pan with charcoal
surrounding it or cook on gas grill in the middle with the middle
1 2lb fresh if possible or frozen(thawed of course) dressed whitefish,
cod, pike, or red snapper with the head and tail
1 clove garlic crushed or minced
6 cloves of garlic halved
2 green onions thinly sliced
1/4 cup butter
Rub the clove of minced garlic on inside cavity of fish. Lightly grease the
cooking grill with olive oil. Place fish in center of the cooking
grill. Grill for 30 minutes or until the fish flakes when tested with
the fork from your barbecue grill set. One alternative is to stuff the
larger fish(like snapper) with cooked wild rice.
While the fish is cooking, prepare the garlic butter, in a small stainless
steel saucepan from your cookware set, saute halved cloves and green
onions in butter over low heat for 12-15 minutes or until tender and
Remove the fish with a long handled spatula from your barbecue grill
accessories and arrange the fish on a serving platter. Spoon garlic
butter over top and serve with the lemon wedges. It makes 4 servings.
Enjoy with a nice spring salad with vinaigrette dressing, roasted
veggies, French Bread or rolls and a nice dry white wine or pino noir.
A great addition to the meal as I mentioned is barbecue grilled
Take asparagus, green, red or yellow peppers(or all 3) and green onions and
wash them, trim the tips of the asparagus, slice the peppers, and cut
the tip off of the green onions with an appropriate cutlery knife from
your cutlery set like a French cutlery knife .
Then turn them in olive oil to coat and place on the grill directly over the
coals or burner or on a porous barbecue grill plate. Cook them until
nice and brown turning every few minutes. The onions and peppers will
cook pretty fast, like 3-4 minutes and the asparagus depending on how
thick will take 5 to 7 minutes. So remember to do towards the end of
the fish cooking time.

Best Fish Fry Techniques and Secrets from a Pro
First, let's talk a little about history.
The Deep South has a fancy for perfectly deep-fried fish and the roots
of fish fries are deeply entangled in Southern food culture. "Fish
fries are working people's food," says John T. Edge, American Food
author and the director of the Southern Foodways Alliance at the
University of Mississippi.
In the South, textile Mills are always located on or near a river. So even
if you didn't have a farm or livestock, people could fish and whatever
they caught, they'd eat on Sunday at a fish fry. Fish camps came about
as place where people caught fish and then ate them during the
Depression era. A fish camp is really just a permanent fish fry house,
located near or on a river or body of water. Later, in the 1950s, these
camps turned into fry shacks and restaurants. Today, fish fry houses or
restaurants serve up thousands of pounds of shrimp and seafood from
around the globe.
"We bring the bounty of the sea to the mountains," says George Baxevanis.
This operation serves at least 40 pounds of fresh cabbage, daily, for its
delicious homemade Cole slaw; 100 pounds of fried baby shrimp; 100
pounds of flounder; and 100 pounds of Alaskan Whitefish. So, this
proves that fish fry houses are still extremely popular in the south.
Typically, fish that is fried is whatever is local - catfish, whiting,
flounder, you name it. If it swims, they can fry it! Shrimp is also a
There are two different approaches to how to batter or coat your fish when
frying. First is with some type of batter. Batter is going to give the
fried fish a golden coating that encrusts the fillet. Batters range from
tempura which is Japanese to the American favorite - beer batter. No
matter which one you choose - the fluffy golden outcome is decadent!
Second, is the traditional southern method which is simply dredging the fish in
a cornmeal mix and then frying. This method produces a lighter end
result and also gives the fish a crust, just not as much as the batter
does. For delicate types of fish filets this is the method of choice.
With either method, cocktail sauce and tartar sauces are a common favorite.
And, don't forget the lemon.
Below are two recipes that demonstrate each method and also tips for deep

Give Mexican Seafood a Try in Your Kitchen
Most people do not think of seafood when
they think of Mexico, but with six thousand miles of coastline, seafood
is an important part of Mexican cuisine. Mexico lies right between the
Pacific and Atlantic oceans and it borders a good portion of the Gulf
of Mexico. This area provides a great variety of seafood that can be
put to good use in Mexican recipes.
Ceviche is a very popular seafood dish from Mexico. Made with small pieces of
raw fish, squid, or shrimp, the recipe includes onion, peppers, salt,
and cilantro. The fish is "cooked" with lemon or limejuice. The citric
acid in the juice changes the proteins in the fish just like cooking.
Even so, some ingredients will be cooked for safety purposes. You can
enjoy ceviche on its own or used as filling for a taco. It is also
wonderful on crackers or tostadas.
Seafood can also be simmered in the Veracruzana style. This is a sauce
preparation made with tomatoes, chilies, olives, and capers. The
resulting dish is both tangy and spicy. This sauce is often prepared
with red snapper or shrimp. Veracruz and its surrounding region are
well known for this and many other seafood dishes.
"A la Plancha" is a Spanish cooking method that is also popular in Mexico.
In this method, a metal plate is set on top of an open flame for
grilling. Fish does not stick to the plate like it does to a grill, yet
it gets all of the grilled flavor.
Winter produces a huge assortment of seafood from the ocean in Mexico. Seafood
is eaten especially on Fridays, when meat is forbidden in the Catholic
religion. Lent is another time when seafood comes to the forefront. It
plays a large part in the religious celebrations each family observes.
Every cook has their own flair of seasoning that they use at this time,
no matter if the seafood is something rich and sumptuous or something
When it comes to making food in your own kitchen, do not overlook the
Mexican recipes for seafood. Fish is really a versatile ingredient.
Many popular dishes in Mexico include spicy stuffed clams, red snapper
and shrimp stuffed chilies. Let them tickle your taste buds without
having to go on vacation.
Be sure and include some of this delicious Mexican food in your recipe
file. Stews and soup are delicious when made with seafood. Use shrimp
in tacos, enchiladas, and many other favorite recipes. A common meal in
Veracruz is seafood and rice. This wonderful meal includes shrimp,
fish, octopus, crab, and clams. Seafood frittatas are another great way
to enjoy the sea's bounty. Add in some oysters, clams, shrimp, fish, or
crab next time you make one.
Do not skip Mexican recipes just because they are for seafood. Mexican
cuisine really knows how to make seafood taste amazing. Explore Mexican
culture through the use of seafood and see what you discover. It will
give you a new perspective and respect for this diverse country.
Seafood really provides the perfect foil for the many spices used in
4 Healthy Snack Ideas for Kids
Besides eating three meals per day, kids
also need three healthy snacks. But what constitutes healthy?
Generally, you will want to stick to the basic food groups of whole
grain, fruits and vegetables, and dairy. Here are some easy to prepare,
but nutritious snacks that fill the bill:
1) Whole Grain Cereal Clusters
Start with 3 cups of whole grain cereal, ½ cup chopped dried
strawberries and 1 ½ cups of white chocolate chips.
2) Cheese and Fruit Kebabs
Put the cereal and strawberries on a bowl. Melt the chocolate and drizzle
it over the bowl mixture. Mix up the melted chocolate and bowl mixture.
Spoon into mini muffin cups, and refrigerate until firm.
When cut into fun shapes, these are a real hit with your kids. Take 4
cantaloupe or honeydew slices (or 2 slices of each), 4 fresh
blackberries, 4 whole fresh strawberries, 2 ounces of reduced fat
cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese and a few stick pretzels.
3) Fruit Smoothie
Using a 1 to 1 ½ inch cookie cutter, cut out shapes from the melon
slices and cheese. Thread the fruit and cheese onto the stick pretzels
While you can buy fruit smoothies, most are loaded with unneeded sugar. You
can make healthy ones at home (and for less money).
4) Snack Mix
Start with an 8 ounce container of nonfat vanilla yogurt, 1 banana, 1 cup of
strawberries or peaches and ¼ cup of orange juice.
Put all of the ingredients into a blender and whip. Serve in glasses.
This snack only takes 15 minutes to make from start to finish. Ingredients
1. 6 cups of popped popcorn
2. Non-stick cooking spray
3. 2 cups of potato sticks
4. 3 tablespoons of grated parmesan cheese
5. 1 ½ cups of peanuts or almonds
6. 1 cup of mixed dried fruit.
Start by popping popcorn either in the microwave or air popper. Lightly coat
with the cooking spray and toss to coat the popcorn evenly. Sprinkle on
the parmesan cheese and toss again. Finish by stirring in the potato
sticks, nuts and dried fruit.
All of these recipes are healthy snacks that take almost no time to
prepare. And all recipes are kid-proven to be something they will eat.
Making your own snacks for your kids is not only cheaper, but you
control what goes into them. Many pre-made snacks are loaded with
sugar, salt and unhealthy fats. At least when you make it yourself, you
can be sure what they eat between meals is healthy and nutritious.

Peanut Butter Hot Cocoa Oatmeal Cookies Recipe
OK - so I obviously wasn't too sure what to
call these cookies, but they sure were good. I have ended up with lots
of free hot cocoa recently, so for some reason I have decided that I
need to figure out a way to put the hot cocoa into cookies. I have no
idea why I wanted to do this, but after my first attempt failed
miserably, I was more determined than ever to make cookies with hot
cocoa. This is probably silly, but I really hate to fail at something,
especially cookies. And trust me, the first batch was so bad I actually
threw them out. (I have never thrown cookies away!) They looked like
really bad fruit roll ups gone bad.
All that to say, after many recipe attempts, I have now come up with
apparently the BEST COOKIES EVER!! according to my expert 12, 3 and 1
year old. The baby doesn't count, but I am sure that he will love them
in a few years as well. OK, I don't know that they are the BEST EVER!!,
but they are at least 1,000 times better than my first attempt. So, if
you have tons of free hot cocoa, and have always wanted to put it in
cookies (surely there is someone else out there like me... Right???),
then this is the recipe for you. Hope you enjoy!!!

Total time: 27 mins

• 1/4 cup whole wheat flour (You can use white, I just always try to use
• 1 packet vanilla hot cocoa (I figured this one is a little less sweet
than others. You might want to cut back a little on the sugar if you
use a regular hot cocoa packet. Also, I don't think I would use a
packet with marshmallows because I would think they would become hard
& crunchy - I learned that on batch 3 or 4 or my attempts.)
• 1 tsp baking soda
• 1 tsp baking powder
• 1 tsp salt
• 1 cup packed light brown sugar
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 cup softened butter
• 1/2 cup peanut butter

Eating Healthy on the Run Can Be Easy
Eating on the go is a reality for busy
families and professionals. This doesn't mean you have to throw caution
to the wind and eat junk food. Maintaining a healthy diet is just as
important as keeping up with your busy schedule. Stress can really
affect the health of your body and mind. By eating a balanced and
healthy diet you can reduce your stress levels and improve your health.
The following tips are a good starting point to remind you eating

low. Additionally, many restaurants are now offering organic and
natural options. When possible take advantage of these healthy

In your car
Eating on the road can be a challenge, but
if you disciplined and make a plan you are sure to stay on track.
First, make sure to plan a head when possible. Make sure to pack meals
or snacks the day before. A thermos is great for keeping food either
hot or cold. Bring plenty of healthy snacks such as carrot sticks,
apple slices or nuts. Second, make a schedule and tick to it. If you
eat lunch at noon each day, plan to have a meal. Don't just delay
eating until you have time. This can get your internal clock all out of
whack and can lead to over eating. Also, make sure to stop to eat, if
at all possible. This will give you a chance to relax and refresh. In
addition, this is also a great time to stretch or walk, which can help
you to feel more alert especially for long drives. Third, make informed
decisions, if you stop at a drive through. "Eat this, not that" is a
great book full of simple food swaps that can help you to make better
decisions when eating fast food. In addition there are many apps the
you can download to your phone to take out the guess work.
Make sure to always be conscious of the foods you choose while on the go.
Being healthy is not always easy, but remember you can always bring a
healthy meal or snack with you. Once you master making the right
choices, eating healthy on the go will become easy.

Everything You Need To Know About The Basics of White Wine
>White wine is always a hit at parties and
get-togethers. Most people can name a favorite brand, but not everyone
truly knows the subtle differences and numerous varieties of the wines
produced by the hundreds of varieties of white wine grapes. These
grapes are planted on all corners of the globe, so the drink you're
sipping on could have started in France, Italy, or Spain! Keep reading
to learn about the flavor profiles and regions of the most common white
wine grapes. This list could obviously be way more extensive, but here
are a few of the more common varieties.
Almost everyone has heard of Chardonnay. It's versatile and popular and grows
all over the globe. Some of the most recognized producers are Burgundy,
France, California, and Australia. Its taste calls to mind fresh green
apples and can be made to be crisp and stony, buttery and toasty, or
even brilliantly fresh if the green apple and citrus flavors are
Chenin Blanc is a white grape typically found in the Loire Valley of France.
It's very versatile and can produce sweet dessert, sparkling, dry, and
off-dry flavors. In South Africa, it is known as Steen. Wines made from
these grapes typically have floral aromas, assertive acidity, and apple
and pear-like flavors.
This variety grows in Alsace and produces very intense floral, aromatic, and
spicy vino. They can range from extremely dry to decadently sweet. In
Oregon and northern Italy, it makes a crisp, grapefruit-flavored wine
that pairs very well with spicy foods and Asian dishes.
This is the most important grape in the northern Rhone, and has only
recently begun to be labeled in the U.S. Both in France and the U.S.,
it is often blended Roussanne, Viognier, and Grenache Blanc. It ripens
reliably and makes full-bodied wine, low-acid and with flavors of
almonds, lightly spiced pears, and white peaches. Some of the oldest
plantings in the world are located in Australia.
There are many varieties of Muscat, but all contain a strong aroma of
oranges. When fermented dry, it generally imparts a hint of sweetness.
Muscat is great for light sparkling wines, especially the Moscato
d'Asti of northern Italy. The Muscats of Australia produce the most
luscious and dense varieties.
Pinot Grigio creates light, food-friendly wines that don't overwhelm the
palate with the taste of alcohol. Popular versions come from the Tre
Venezie, Alsace, and the Pfalz region of Germany. A very close cousin,
Pinot Gris, has become the pre-eminent wine of Oregon. The California
version of Pinot Grigio is heavier, but vintners in Washington make a
version that is intense, tart, and pairs well with seafood.
Use your newfound knowledge to discuss your drink options with guests at
your next dinner party or event. Your friends will surely be impressed
by your repertoire.

Unusual Racks for Wine Storage
Wine storage is an important consideration
for any connoisseur. When you want to keep your bottles of vino secure
for future enjoyment, consider unusual racks to hold them safely.
Unexpected designs, colors, and shapes can breathe fresh life into your
collection. Because the environment is crucial, consider these
requirements as you design your storage area.
- Consider a rack suspended from the ceiling for a stylish and unusual
option. Designs vary, but individual sleeves hanging from cording or
wire might hold each bottle. Place this rack in a bar area or a corner
of your kitchen to keep your inventory within easy reach.
- A variety of themes are available for wine storage. Try racks shaped as
specific letters for a personalized option. Design styles can also
match hobbies or interests. A dart target board with holes to hold
bottles is one option. Designs shaped like animals also appeal to many
connoisseurs. You might even find racks shaped like sports equipment,
musical instruments, iconic structures such as the Eiffel Tower or the
Empire State Building, or fun themes such as robots.
- If space is an issue, choose wine storage that hugs the wall. One
option involves large, steel sleeves that hold each bottle securely.
Another design allows you to slip each neck into a metal sleeve to hold
the bottles securely. A wood unit can sit flush against the wall for
the efficient use of space. These designs typically hold each bottle at
an angle for easy viewing and selection.
After choosing the location for wine storage, you will need to maintain it
carefully to preserve your investment.
Wine Cellar Design Tips
- Maintain temperatures between 40 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit at all
- Never allow the temperature to fluctuate more than 5 degrees.
- Humidity levels must be greater than 50 percent.
- Never allow direct sunlight to enter into this environment, because
significant damage can occur.
Keeping wine in conditions that deviate from these parameters may lead to quick
spoiling. Most connoisseurs have no trouble eliminating sunlight and
setting the temperature to fall between the recommended numbers. Many
people struggle with preventing temperature fluctuations and
maintaining the proper humidity levels, however. This is the reason
that some people decide to create a cellar in their homes.
If you decide to become serious about wine storage, a wine cellar will
ensure that you maintain the proper temperature in the area. Location
of the cellar is an important consideration. For optimal results, you
will need an area that enables you to control the environment easily.
Basements are ideal for use as a storage facility because you can often
maintain temperatures more easily below ground level. If you don't have
a basement available, choose a nook or corner where you can keep the
temperature and humidity level constant. It's possible to install a
compact unit with shelving and glass doors virtually anywhere in the
house, including the kitchen, a living area, or even under the stairs.
After exploring your many storage options, settle on the methods that will
maintain your investment in a way that suits your budget and

Blueberries are extremely healthy. Just one serving of blueberries, which is one
cup, contains only 80 calories. They are also very high in vitamin C,
and contain a healthy amount of fiber, vitamin A and potassium, as
well. Blueberries are a great anti-oxidant which fights cancer and
heart disease. According to MayoClinic.com, they are a great source of
phytonutrients which are compounds that are good for the brain and
enhance the memory, as well as, fight brain related diseases like
Alzheimer's disease. I used the "Heart Healthy Bisquick" that has less
fat, carbohydrates, and calories than the regular kind. With the

Your Whisky - Whisky Types And Varieties
There are a number of different types of
alcoholic beverages, and in the midst of all of these, whisky stands
out as different. With different types and varieties made from
fermented grain mash, this highly desirable beverage has a number of
different varieties. For example, there are different types of grain
that is used in the production of whisky, such as barley, malted
barley, maize, wheat and rye. The finished product is usually stored in
an oak cask, and it gets better with age. Choosing the right variety of
whisky that will best suit your palate can be quite a challenge and can
pose a great deal of confusion. The list below can make this task a bit
easier for you!
One of the most popular varieties of whisky, Scotch is made from peat
dried malted barley which has been distilled after fermentation. This
distilled mixture is then blended with corn rye whisky. The corn rye is
distilled at 180 proof whereas the initial distillation of the
fermented barley is done at 140 proof. The end result is a light bodied
smoky flavored drink that has its origins in Scotland.
Made out of malted barley, this type of whisky follows the traditional
method of fermenting and distilling, and is very widely available. The
pot in which it is made is traditionally shaped like an onion.
Single Malt Whisky
This type of whisky comes out of just one distillery and is not blended with
any other type of whisky. It is made purely out of malted barley and
bears the trademark of the distillery in its taste, which is specific
to the distillery. This can be further blended with other varieties of
this beverage for those who would like to have variations in the taste
of Single Malt Whisky.
Vatted Malt Whisky
Malt whiskies from different distilleries are taken together and blended to
form Vatted Malt Whisky. There are different types of labels that
denote this type of whisky. Look out for labels that say "Malt, "Pure
Malt" or "Blended Malt", and you will know that this is Vatted Malt.
This type of whisky is distilled at nothing more than 160 proof and is known
for its full flavour, aroma and body. The minimum strength of the
finished product is 80 proof, contains no additives apart from water,
and is left to age for at least 2 years in charred oak barrels.
Depending on the type of dominant grain used in the mash, the name of
the whisky is labeled. When corn is used, it is known as Straight Corn
Whisky and when wheat is used, it is known as Straight Wheat Whisky.
Blended Whisky is usually a blend between grain whisky and malt whisky. As
grain whiskies are generally accounted to be of lower quality taste, a
blend of malt whisky improves the quality of the final product. Blended
Whisky is a product derived on blending malt whiskies of a number of
Malted as well as unmalted barley, apart from other grains such as maize and
wheat are used to produce grain whisky. It was first in the 1930's that
this type of whisky was produced, as a special still was invented for
the purpose of its production. Used primarily in blends, this whisky is
also good for consumption by itself.
Cask Strength Whisky
Cask Strength Whisky is whisky that is bottled as soon as it is taken from
the cask, without any dilution. The alcohol content in this type of
whisky is higher due to this.
Pure Pot Still Whisky
Pure Pot Still Whisky is whisky that is distilled in a pot-still, using mash
that is composed of malted and unmalted barley. It is a product of
Ireland and can be found exclusively there.
Rye Whisky is not very popular and is generally used in mixed drinks.
However, many whisky lovers like it because of its heavier body that is
made out of a fermented mash of a minimum of 51% rye.
A product of the United States, Bourbon Whisky is the finest spirit made
in this nation. With at least 51% corn, this whisky is distilled at
nothing less than 160 proof and stored in new charred oak barrels. The
flavour is sweet and full bodied.
A blended malt of half oats and half barley is used to make Irish Whisky.
There is no sweet or smoky flavour and has a blended taste of its own.
Produced primarily in Canada, Canadian Whisky is usually made with corn.
However, it can also contain wheat, barley or rye. The mash is
distilled at a rather high proof and prior to bottling, it is filtered.
Stored in either a new or an old barrel, it is expected to be left to
age for at least 2 years before use. The taste is slightly sweet and is

Main Courses: Seafood, Poultry, Pasta and Casseroles
It seems to me that lately, tilapia seems to
be a new inexpensive fish. Where did this come from? It seems tilapia,
originally a fresh water fish from Africa which has made its way to
American fish farms. So how does tilapia work on the dinner table?
First this is a whitefish that takes on the flavor of what it is cooked
in. Tilapia is very tender so it is best cooked steamed, baked or
broiled. It is high in protein and low in cost. It will be around a
Poultry on the other hand can be cooked use most methods. I choose the thighs,
tenders and legs over the more expensive breasts, even when the recipe
calls out chicken breast as most do. The thighs and legs have bone in
them which enhances the chicken flavor. Just use what your mother said
and wash your hands after handling raw chicken. If you do not, you may
spread salmonella, a bacteria responsible for food poisoning.
Pasta is best if made from scratch. But if you don't have the equipment or
the desire to spend the time making your own, the store bought variety
will do. Pasta, in most cases is simply semolina flour, eggs and salt.
If you don't have a pasta roller, a rolling pin may do. The cost is
cheaper than the store bought kind and you control the quality. Fresh
pasta will absorb any sauce that you pair it with better. And lastly, a
must to know if making your own pasta is to let it dry for 15 minutes
after cutting so it will not clump together is the boiling water.
Casseroles are their own worst enemies, boil overs in the oven, soggy, under and
at the same time over cooked ingredients, mushy pasta, or leftover
casseroles being overcooked. What a mess, why would anyone even want to
try a casserole? Because they meld flavors well, they are a one pot
dish, they allow you to use up leftovers and they freeze well. To
prevent boil overs in the oven, butter the lip of your casserole dish
before you start. To eliminate a soggy casserole, squeeze out extra
moisture from greens and defrost frozen vegetables in a colander to
allow for drip drying. To prevent pasta from becoming mushy, under cook
it by 6 minutes and allow the sauce of the casserole to finish cooking
it. And to equal out cooking times of different vegetables, parboil, or
partially cook the heavier ones like potatoes, yams and turnips.
to Drink a Bottle of Wine Without Getting a Hangover
OK, most of us want to enjoy the pleasures
of alcohol from time to time and let the good times roll, but we are
terrified of the horrible morning beast of hangover (especially all of
us who are over 30). It drains our good mood and makes us speak
Norwegian in the bathroom in the morning. It makes us apprehensive when
we enter a room full of party people and see the open bar glimmering in
the corner. The beast simply takes away half of the fun that drinking
often provides, because it constantly reminds us that it is alive and
growing with each glass we raise on our eager lips.
But hey, I have some good news for you! There is, after all, a way to kill
the beast and enjoy the joys of drinking. If you follow the below
procedure, you should be able to drink a bottle of wine and wake up
hangover free in the morning. It works, I can tell you that much
because I used to have the most horrible hangovers after just having a
couple of glasses of wine.
The method, however, only applies to normally built men (and huge men, of
course). Women and lightweights shouldn't, unfortunately, expect
similar results. It's not my fault. Blame the laws of physics. Well,
here we go:
1. Choose a wine that has less than 13% alcohol.
2. Don't buy the cheap stuff.
3. Start drinking only when you are sober/hangover-free.
4. Have a hearty meal and a handful of almonds before you start drinking.
5. Start drinking early, preferably between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
7. After the first two glasses, and showing off your amazing small talk
skills, drink two large glasses of water and take a 30-minute/1 hour
8. After the break, drink no more than a glass of wine per hour and eat
something between each glass or have a light meal later in the evening.
10. Stop drinking before 11 p.m. If you haven't finished the wine, throw it
away or store it.
11. After you are done with the wine, have a small snack and drink two
large glasses of water.
12. Go to sleep before midnight and have a glass of water by your bed. If
you wake up thirsty in the middle of the night, take a sip of water.
13. Try to sleep at least 8 hours.
14. Wake up hangover free.

At the Munich Oktoberfest, where more steins
are used and purchased today than anywhere else, an annual contest
produces a winning design that is used on the official Oktoberfest
stein. It was common in Germany in the past to give engraved steins
engraved to commemorate special dates and events, and many
manufacturers have produced series of themed steins similar to the
plates and porcelain figures made in many places in Germany and
elsewhere for Christmas and other occasions.
Regimental steins have been a German military tradition since the nineteenth
century. Commemorative steins were occasionally made prior to German
unification, but the Franco-Prussian war that led to the creation of
the German Empire led to an increase in the manufacture of steins for
different branches of the Imperial Army and Navy and for reservists
completing their active duty.
Occupational steins were made for most of the professions and many businesses. As
for soldiers, steins were frequently given to newly-minted doctors and
lawyers, and sometimes honored retirees in the way that gold watches
have done in Britain and the United States. Sometimes sentimental and
sometimes whimsical steins depicted aspects of the daily work of
pediatricians and schoolteachers and dentists. A whimsical vein was
also evident in character steins, which were modeled in the shape of a
person or an animal. These sometimes depicted figures from folklore, or
were made to illustrate certain types of people or personality types.
Steins were initially flat and had designs and pictures painted on
them, but as earthenware was replaced by increasingly durable
stoneware, three-dimensional or relief designs came to be used, and
these sometimes extended into the handle of the stein, which was
sometimes made of stoneware and sometimes of metal.
It is the lid that distinguishes a stein from a mug, and these often
indicate the age and manufacture and can help determine the price for
collectors. The most common and least costly is a conical or
steeple-shaped lid, while flat pewter lids are often engraved on the
top. More ornate pewter lids with a conical shape and a finial, a
design or a figure, on top are made for limited edition steins aimed at
Ornamented lids with an outer pewter surface and a glass or stoneware inset
containing a figure or bearing a design are also prized by collectors.
Some other prized lids, particularly with three-dimensional designs,
are made of stoneware and attached to the lip by a pewter fitting.
Many steins are so ornate that it seems a shame to drink from them, and in
fact many are never used for the intended purpose but are instead
sought by collectors. Stein Collectors International is an American and
European group of beer stein enthusiasts that this year celebrates its
50th anniversary, and two prominent groups (AlteGermanen and Die
Krugsammler e. V.) seek to preserve the German stein tradition on its

The Benefits of Craft Beer
Craft beer is manufactured by an
independent, small brewing company. This type of beverage would not be
the product of a large, traditional brewer. Once you develop a taste
for this unusual style, you may be pleased to learn about the many
benefits of drinking this libation.
You might be pleasantly surprised by the different styles and tastes you
encounter when you explore craft beer. Instead of drinking the dull and
lifeless concoctions produced by the big manufacturers, you can sip

Higher Alcohol Content
Alcohol levels are typically higher in these specialty ales. Generic beer
usually has an alcohol content of approximately two to three percent,
with light products having even less alcohol. In contrast, craft beer
tends to come in at between five and ten percent, with some products
reaching 20 percent or even as high as 40 percent.
You may not be accustomed to connecting health benefits with these types of
drinks, but specialty ales have ingredients that can improve your
health. The nutrients include B vitamins, soluble fiber, and
antioxidants such as ferulic acid. These craft beverages are actually
higher in antioxidants than red wine. Drinking these beverages may also
help you combat osteoporosis.
Although these cold ones can be pricey if you consider the individual price when
compared to standard beverages, it's likely that you will spend less
overall by choosing these drinks. The reason this choice is less
expensive than traditional beverages is because of the elevated alcohol
content. Because these libations are more satisfying with a higher
alcohol content, you will drink less than traditional lagers, but you
will likely enjoy the drinks much more.
Small, nontraditional breweries usually create seasonal choices for customers.
It's common for new releases to come out with the changing seasons, or
a brewery will bring back old favorites to usher in a new time of year.
You might enjoy experimenting with different flavors to find new
favorites. In addition, sample brews from other local breweries or try
unusual ones from different regions and countries.
Celebrating the Independent
Instead of supporting the big monopolies, you might enjoy channeling your money
into the smaller companies that are striving to create and provide an
artisan product. The independent breweries make up a small percentage
of the alcoholic beverage industry, so supporting these companies can
help ensure that they remain a thriving alternative. When you sip one
of these artisan drinks, you have the opportunity to taste individual
creativity with authentic flavors.
Explore a veritable feast of alcoholic options when you open the door to craft
beer. You may be surprised at the beverage and food combinations you
concoct when you pair delicious foods with innovative libations.

2 Pastas With Canned Tuna
two recipes contain both pasta and canned tuna, but the results are as
different as summer and winter. The tuna pomodoro is tomato sauce
served on top of whole-wheat spaghetti, while the second recipe is a
baked mac and cheese with broccoli and tuna.
This dish is light, delicious, and filling, and I think it is the best
pantry pasta ever. In a recipe with such few ingredients, it will be
apparent if you try substitutions like tuna in water instead of tuna in
oil. I know from personal experience that it will not taste the same.
Tuna Mac and Cheese
• 8 oz. whole-wheat angel hair pasta
• 2 tablespoons of olive oil (optional)
• 2 cloves of garlic, minced
• 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
• one 14.5 can of Hunt's Diced Tomatoes in Sauce, undrained
• one 5 oz. can of tuna in oil
• dried basil, to taste
1. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Salt the water and add the spaghetti.
Cook according to package directions and drain well.
2. In the meantime, heat the oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. (If
you'd like, you can save the oil from the tuna when you drain it from
the can, and use 2 tablespoons of that oil.)
3. Add the minced garlic and crushed red pepper, and saute for a quick
4. Add the canned tomatoes with the juices to the pot, turn the heat down
to medium, and let simmer for about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add the drained tuna and cook until warmed through, about 2 minutes.
Add several generous dashes of dried basil. Stir to incorporate the
ingredients. Serve with whole wheat spaghetti.
For weeks, I had a hankering for tuna. Then the weather turned cold and I
wanted broccoli soup. Since I make mac and cheese regularly, testing
and developing recipes for my website, I thought I'd combine all these
things together. The cheese sauce for this macaroni is made from canned

• one can tuna, drained (I used 5 ounces, but you can use more if you
• half of a 12 oz bag of frozen broccoli
• one 10.5 oz can cheddar cheese or broccoli cheese soup
• 2 1/2 cups cheddar cheese, grated or shredded
• 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
• 1/2 cup milk
• salt and pepper to taste
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Cook macaroni according to package
directions. Place the broccoli in a colander and pour the hot water and
pasta over the vegetables as you drain off the water.
3. Add the drained pasta and broccoli back to the pot. Mix the canned
soup, mustard, tuna, cheese, salt, pepper, and milk. Stir to combine.
Pour the mixture into a greased casserole dish. Bake for 15 minutes,
top with the rest of the cheese, and bake for another 5 minutes.
